Unity in Diversity – Happy Independence Day Indonesia!

Every year on August 17th Indonesians celebrate Independence from Dutch colonial rule by holding national flag ceremonies followed by festive events. These include a national and patriotic music concert featuring the Indonesian national anthem. Lastly, the most fascinating and much anticipated events are cultural parades. In this cultural parade, we can see the traditional costume, dance, instruments and songs from 34 provinces. Sadly, during this new normal, the celebration of the independence day will be different, but Indonesians will always have gratitude for the sacrifice of their heroes and, of course, will always be proud to be Indonesian.

A few days before this celebration, almost every house, office and building are flying the national flag, and decorations are dominated by Indonesian’s flag colours: red and white. The flag is known as ‘Sang Saka Merah Putih’ – the red symbolizes human blood and the white symbolizes the human spirit.

Beside the flag, another popular decoration is Indonesian national emblem, a Garuda bird with heraldic shield on its chest and a scroll gripped by its talons, also known as Garuda Pancasila. The shield with 5 symbols on it represents Pancasila – the 5 principles of Indonesia’s national ideology. The Garuda claws gripping a white ribbon scroll inscribed with the national motto: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means “Unity in Diversity.”

From all of us at Taksu, Happy Independence Day and may you find a safe way to celebrate with your family on this special occasion…
